How twitter reacted to Manchester United’s derby day triumph

Published:

Manchester United ended a four-game losing streak against rivals Manchester City in emphatic fashion at the weekend coming back from an early setback to run out 4-2 winners at Old Trafford.

Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling were the scorers on a day that saw the red half of Manchester move four points clear of the Citizens and practically ensure Champions League football for next term and bragging rights for the foreseeable future.

Here is the best of how twitter reacted to another classic Manchester derby…

As with any derby the back and forth started well before kick-off with fans from either side of the red/blue divide doing their utmost to unsettle their rivals.

This Subbuteo-themed creation evoking memories of that Wayne Rooney goal was perhaps the pick of the bunch though…

Never one to shy away from a straight-talking or controversial comment, high profile City fan Noel Gallagher recently commented that Louis van Gaal was an irrelevance to the Citizens’ season and was reminded of that sentiment throughout the afternoon.

The scoreline implies it was a game of goals and it was but there are plenty of stats to suggest that it was passing (or a lack thereof) that won the game.

First up for some harsh home truths was under fire City captain Vincent Kompany…

However, the Belgian cannot be singled out, with City as a whole not performing that much better…

And to show them how it should be done, United’s Michael Carrick was on hand to deliver a midfield master class with a performance described as “perfect” by Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness.

As expected the derby was a hard fought affair with most players leaving the pitch with a few scrapes and bruises. Not so City’s Argentine defender Martin Demeichellis though. He seemed to have some divine protection…

United defender Phil Jones had a mixed display going from pathetic misplaced passes to solid and aware defending in a blink of any eye – that’s if those eyes do in fact blink of course…

Red Devils fans could be heard mocking City’s inability to fill the Etihad on a weekly basis and according to some tweets this result could make that feat even harder to achieve in the future…

With the result taking United onto a six-game winning streak in the Premier league Louis van Gaal is starting to justify the faith the Old Trafford board have put in him but after two excellent displays from Mata and Fellaini some were quick to point out where the credit could lie…

It was the Dutchman who had the last word, however, apologising to his wife’s City-supporting hairdresser for making her suffer…
