Love Your Club: Kevin Thomson – Dundee

Dundee’s Kevin Thomson says the Ladbrokes Premiership is the club’s rightful home and he’s made it his mission to make sure the club remains at the top.
The 30-year-old is gearing up for his second season at Dens Park and knows the club’s loyal supporters will not stand for poor performances.
Here the Dark Blues’ captain tells us why he loves Dundee FC…
Why do you love Dundee FC?
It’s a great club. I was really surprised and a wee bit taken aback when I got here by the size of the club.
I think the two Dundee sides are underrated. We’ve got a great manager and a good group of players that can hopefully get Dundee back on the map and consistently staying in the Premier League where I think we belong.
Describe the fans and what they mean to the club
The fans have been great with me and I’m obviously very proud to be the club’s captain.
It was a successful season at times last year so we gave the fans something to shout about but it’s up to us as a group of players to continue that and we know that any slacking and they’ll soon change their opinion.
We need to be on our toes and playing well to give them something to sing about this season.
What’s the vibe like in the dressing room?
It’s pretty much the same as any other club I’ve been at. The camaraderie amongst the squad is great and I think that’s really important.
To have a successful team you don’t all have to be best mates and it’s never going to be like that but when you train you have to respect each other and get after each other to a certain degree as well.
If you want to be successful you always have to push each other on and we’ve got plenty of boys that do that up at Dens Park and fingers crossed that will stand us in good stead.
Can you name a Dundee Backroom Hero?
I think Lorraine the kit lady and the dinner ladies are really underrated. When it comes to all the clubs in the league I think Lorraine probably works off the tightest budget. She’s got to look after 25 first-team players, plus another 20 youth players plus all the staff to make sure they’ve all got pants and socks and all this type of stuff.
And it’s the same again with Allie in the kitchen. She’s got to cater for 50 to 60 people every day so these people are really important for clubs. From the outside you never see these people but they are really appreciated by everyone within the club.
What do you love most about being a Dundee footballer?
I just love playing football. I’ve been really unfortunate with injuries throughout my career so I never take it for granted.
I mean it from the bottom of my heart; I enjoy training and I enjoy playing football. I’ve not got many years left so I enjoy every game I play.
