Manchester United set to sign hot Bundesliga prospect

Manchester United’s bid to add players only the most ardent of football hipsters have heard of looks set to continue with reported interest in Hakan Çalhanoğlu.

For the uninitiated the 21-year-old Turkey international is currently plying his trade in the Bundesliga for Bayer Leverkusen but reports in his homeland suggest a €36m fee has already been agreed.

United and Leverkusen have already conducted business this transfer window, with Javier Hernandez moving in the opposite direction for £7.3m on Monday.

Logic would dictate that if United were genuinely interested in adding Çalhanoğlu to the squad then the deals would have happened simultaneously but Turkish news provider Koprubasi TV is claiming the deal is on the verge of completion.

Despite playing his international football for Turkey, Çalhanoğlu was born in Germany and has only ever played there, starting his career at Karlsruher before moving to Hamburg and then Leverkusen.

It was a return of 17 goals in 36 games in his second season at Karlsruher that saw him catch the eye and a tally of 11 in 32 games at Hamburg earned him his move to Bayer.

A total of 13 goals last season showed there is plenty of potential for the youngster to blossom and two goals from four games this season hint at solid form.

United are seemingly desperate for attacking reinforcements, with Wayne Rooney’s league goal drought continuing at Swansea at the weekend.

The Red Devils have also allowed Adnan Junzaj to follow Hernandez out of the exit door – on loan to Borussia Dortmund – while James Wilson is also expected to be granted a temporary leave.

France teenager Anthony Martial is supposedly the new striker coming through the doors but should attacking midfielder Çalhanoğlu arrive and continue his scoring streak the pressure on the front men could be relieved.
