Spurs squad blended well enough to collect silverware in ’15/16

Since securing their second and last English title to date in 1961, it’s fair to say that Tottenham Hotspurs have become better known for their cup conquests, where they currently stand as the third most successful club in terms of FA Cup and League Cup wins respectively.

Half a century on from their crowning glory to date, the current White Hart Lane outfit look ripe for further success of some variety, with more than one whisper hinting at a potential title challenge.

Having dispatched a West Ham side responsible for Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool’s scalps on their travels this season, 4-1 at the Lane, Spurs equalled their best Premier League unbeaten streak of 12 in unerring fashion.

That result took Mauricio Pochettino’s men to within four points of Leicester’s surprisingly brisk top-flight pace and while 20/1 on Spurs being crowned champions may still be scoffed at in some quarters, 7/2 on the Lilywhites landing any major trophy this season is far from fanciful.

Despite arch rivals Arsenal ensuring a fifth League Cup crown will elude them for another season at least, Spurs have seldom been in ruder health where the make-up and balance of their squad is concerned.

Although signing a quality alternative to the sensational Harry Kane may end up being the difference between a sustained title tilt, or simply challenging for the top four, Pochettino has pieced together his jigsaw admirably.

For a club infamous for neglecting defensive rigidity for ingrained traditions of attacking football, Spurs’ newfound resilience is the most encouraging aspect of the Argentine’s work.

The signing of Toby Alderweireld to partner compatriot Jan Vertonghen has been inspired and together the pair have worked like clockwork at the heart of the defence, helping create a concrete platform for the flair players to go and express themselves from.

Adding to that firmness – only Manchester United have conceded fewer league goals – is Eric Dier patrolling in front of the Belgians, recast as a defensive midfield lynchpin and earning England acclaim in the process.

Deli Alli’s emergence as a true box-to-box midfielder has proved an equal revelation, kudos to Pochettino’s judgement yet again, and arguably a huge benefit to England ahead of the Euros as well.

New signing Son Heung-min is also displaying signs of blossoming in English football too, while Erik Lamela is a player reborn to add to Spurs’ attacking threat, spearheaded by the irrepressible Kane.

On the eve of their penultimate Europa League group game, Spurs sit pretty at the summit and look to have a great chance to advance in the competition – priced at 18/1 for a fourth major European trophy in the club’s history.

The FA Cup is still in its infant stages, but the eight-time winners will no doubt be targeting the trophy they haven’t lifted since 1991 also when they enter the fray in January.

It could be a vintage year for Tottenham fans and a profitable one for punters investing in the 7/2 they end it with some silverware for the first time since 2008.
