Arsenal’s midfield set for big-money boost this January

With the best chance to win the Premier League in over 10 years at their feet, Arsenal are preparing to do business in the January transfer window in order to help push them over the line in the second half of the season.
Arsene Wenger has already intimated that he will be a busy buyer in the winter window. Although initial links with recently crowned African Player of the Year striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang look to be misplaced, the Frenchman is back in the hunt for other positions.
As such, Gunners fans will peruse the Sunday papers and find their club rumoured to be in pursuit of two young midfielders, namely Granit Xhaka of Borussia Monchengladbach and Adrien Rabiot of Paris Saint-Germain.
The latter should not be an unfamiliar name to regular readers of the gossip pages, having been linked with almost every top-flight London club going in the past 18 months, however, Xhaka’s appearance alongside the Frenchman is intriguing.
A 23-year-old Swiss international, Xhaka has been a Gladbach player since 2012 when he moved to the Bundesliga club from Basel. His arrival would finally bring some much-needed competition to Francis Coquelin as the holding midfielder at the Emirates.
A fiery customer who is the youngest player ever to receive five red cards in the German top-flight, the 39-cap international would be a dynamic presence in the heart of Arsenal’s midfield. Having been handed the Gladbach captaincy at just 23-years-old too, the Swiss could develop into the leader Arsenal sorely miss.
By contrast, Rabiot, who also plays in deep-lying midfield, is a closer fit to the customary Gunners signing. Technically proficient, with an eye for a pass and possession retention, the 20-year-old reportedly travelled to London for talks with the north Londoners this weekend.
Two points clear of Leicester in the Premier League after 20 games, Arsenal are 11/10 favourites with Ladbrokes to win the title this season.
