Transfer ban puts Simeone at the head of the betting for Chelsea job

The prospects of Diego Simeone prowling the Stamford Bridge touchline has taken a massive step closer to becoming a reality this week with the news of Atletico Madrid’s impending transfer ban.

The Argentinean has been cut into joint-favouritism to be the man in charge of Chelsea for the first game of next season after the Spanish giants were punished for breaking the rules on signing under-age players.

Previously a 6/1 charge, Simeone has been slashed to 4/1 to take over from Guus Hiddink at the climax of the current season.

Staying in charge at the Vicente Calderon Stadium has been something that Simeone has stressed he is keen to do recently, but that was before the latest development.

Now with Atletico banned from registering any new players during the summer transfer window or the following January, the pull of the Premier League could become even stronger for the 45-year-old.

According to The Mirror, Simeone is Chelsea’s number one target to bring in over the summer and this latest tying of his hands will surely only strengthen the Blues’ position on the matter.

Vying for favouritism with the Madrid man is incumbent in west London Guus Hiddink.

The Dutchman has steadied the ship in the capital since taking over just before Christmas, leading the champions to three wins and three draws from six games.

They still find themselves languishing in the bottom half of the table, but if the interim boss can continue to guide them up the table, his chances of securing a longer term deal would surely increase.

He could be a strong alternative to a new man coming in, but with the latest news potentially unsettling Roman Abramovich’s reported top target, it could be another short and sweet stay in London for the former Real Madrid boss.
