Boro close in on Jordan Rhodes as Rovers’ hopes fade

Published:

As they continue their bid to return to the Premier League, Championship leaders Middlesbrough are looking to take another step to the promised land with the signing of Jordan Rhodes.

A deal between club and player has been on and off throughout the January window, but it looks like an agreement may be reached in the dying hours.

The loss of Rhodes would be a major blow to Blackburn, who are just five points above the relegation zone.

Aitor Karanka’s Boro are allegedly stumping up £13m for the Scot, a fee which would make the deal one of the biggest in Europe during the window.

Rovers have hung on and fended off many an admiring glance for the 25-year-old, who they signed from Huddersfield in 2012 for £8m.

A profit of £5m then isn’t to be sniffed at, but Paul Lambert’s side have struggled for goals this term, with Rhodes netting 10 of their 24 Championship strikes.

Selling on deadline day also leaves Rovers will little to no time to reinvest the money, should owners Venky’s choose to do so.

But for Middlesbrough it represents the arrival of one of the best strikers outside of the Premier League, and would be the latest move from Karanka in preparation for an expectant return to top tier football next season.
