Soccer Aid 2016: Five of Soccer Aid’s best ever moments

| 03.06.2016

This Sunday sees another batch of celebrities and former footballing greats take to the turf at Old Trafford for Soccer Aid, with all proceeds going to the Unicef foundation.

The 2016 encounter should be another fine battle between talent and ambition, with the English side lead by Jose Mourinho, Robbie Williams, Sam Allardyce and Bradley Walsh. There’s a karaoke band in there somewhere.

A host of famous names and ex-England internationals including Sol Campbell, Robbie Fowler, David Seaman and Jermain Defoe will hope to beat the latest assembled squad from the Rest of the World.

This year they’re led by a certain Claudio Ranieri, who can do no wrong, and Niall Horan from One Direction (no not the one that tried to buy Doncaster).

Actor Michael Sheen skippers the visitors, and we wonder if he’ll call on his time portraying the great Brian Clough for some inspiration?

Sir AP McCoy is also in the squad, which includes former Manchester United favourite Jaap Stam, Brazil legends Cafu and Ronaldhino (watch out Dave…), Edgar Davids and Fabio Cannavaro among others.

Now in it’s 10th year, this annual dose of good-willed family fun has seen some pretty memorable moments.

Here are five of the best…

Sheringham versus Ramsay – 2012

Stick a fork in him, Ramsay’s done.

He may be a big fella, but during the 2012 edition, the renowned chef was pan-fried/baked/seared to the ground by former Old Trafford favourite Teddy Sheringham.

Zinedine Zidane versus Damian Lewis – 2010

Damian Lewis is a cool guy, right?

But he’s not Zinedine Zidane cool.

Although to be able to say you’ve been nutmegged by Zizou is better than most of us could ever do…

Woody Harrelson versus Jamie Theakston – 2010

After losing the first two Soccer Aids, acclaimed actor Woody Harrelson finally gave the Rest of the World something to cheer about.

After a 2-2 draw at the Theatre of Dreams, an enthralling penalty shoot-out saw the sides still locked after 10 pens each. Even ROW keeper Patrick Kielty scored one.

So up stepped TV regular and England goalie Jamie Theakston… who would then try and save Harrelson’s effort…

Serge Pizzorno versus David Seaman – 2012

Are you watching Claudio Ranieri?

If it weren’t for Riyad Mahrez, Kasabian frontman Serge Pizzorno could have forced himself into the Foxes’ reckoning with talent like this.

The Leicester fan just showcased all of his Italian heritage to chip England and Arsenal legend David Seaman like he was an average Joe, to open the scoring back in 2012.

He’s 10/1 to score first again this weekend, by the way…

Boris Johnson versus Germany  – 2006

Now we know this isn’t Soccer Aid, but we can’t have an article on charity football without including this brutal gem from the former Mayor of London in 2006.

Richard loves his sport, especially if it involves the sound of tyres screaming around a race track. He's not fussy though and his '90s Premier League nostalgia and knowledge of team nicknames is tough to match.
