Is former Arsenal star set for sensational return to the Emirates?

Published:

He’s won the Premier League, he’s his country’s all-time leading scorer and he’s bagged goals wherever he’s played during his career.

And after his current club recently announced they would be terminating his contract the striker in question is now reportedly keen on a return to London, according to reports in The Mirror.

So could Robin van Persie be the short-term answer to Arsenal’s quest for league dominance once again?

It’s unlikely that many Arsenal fans will forgive the Dutch striker for leaving them for Manchester United should he make a return.

But if there’s one way of repaying them, it’s with goals – something the Gunners are in desperate need of following Olivier Giroud’s abysmal end to last season and Danny Welbeck’s ongoing injury problems.

Wenger will face stiff competition for Van Persie’s signature from Crystal Palace and West Ham. And with no transfer fee attached, this one may come down to who can offer the biggest contract.

Having already signed one young striker in Takuma Asano and taking a hefty chunk out of the budget with the acquisition of Granit Xhaka, it would be uncharacteristic of Wenger to continue to spend this summer, regardless of the apparent bottomless pit at his disposal.

If reports are true, and Van Persie is keen on a move back to London, Arsenal can offer him something that Palace and West Ham can’t, and that’s another crack at Champions League football.

With The Hammers and The Eagles unlikely to cover his wages and both clubs seemingly on the hunt for a younger striker, a move back to the Emirates could end up being Van Persie’s only option if he’s that keen on a return to the Premier League.
