5 games you should get yourself down to on Non League Day

There’s nothing quite like Non League Football. From chatting with the players on the touchline as they go through the warm-ups to catching the ball on the terraces – all while sipping a cup of piping-hot Bovril, of course – it’s endlessly fun, social and family friendly.

So, with bumper crowds expected for this year’s Non League Day – Saturday September 3 – here’s where you should be going for your live football fix.

Aldershot Town v Tranmere Rovers (National League)

Two former Football League stalwarts face off in the National League’s game of the day, with the Shots currently in the play-off spots, while Tranmere are top of the pile with a whopping 19 points from their first seven games.

And Aldershot’s Recreation Ground home is one of English football’s most distinctive footballing venues, with the town’s distinctive architecture and leafy spots both visible from its stands.

There’s also a stellar turnout expected, with Tranmere boasting the biggest crowds in Non-League while the Hampshire outfit average better numbers than multiple clubs in League Two.

A crucial clash in a characterful ground, with a great crowd expected? If you’re in the area, it’s a no-brainer.

Salford City v Alfreton Town (National League North)

It’s not just Manchester United’s Class of 92 who have been catching the eye up at Salford City, with the Ammies already eyeing up another promotion, having taken 17 points from their first seven fixtures in the National League North.

And the visit of Alfreton promises a goal glut, with 27 goals hitting the net in the Derbyshire outfit’s last four games, while their striker Daniel Bradley is one to watch, with six goals in his last seven league games.

However, the best-known ‘ones to watch’ are the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville, with the former Manchester United legends regularly heading down to Moor Lane for matches.

Who knows – you could find yourself dancing on the terraces with a 13-time Premier League winner if the Ammies grab a last-gasp winner!

Stafford Rangers v Kidsgrove Athletic (FA Cup)

Nothing gets the pulse racing quite like a derby – especially when there’s the chance to take your promotion-winning rivals down a peg or two. That’s what Kidsgrove will be looking to do when they make the 23-mile trip across Staffordshire for this enticing FA Cup tie.

Rangers are unbeaten since their promotion to the Northern Premier League, so the hosts will be favourites for this one, against their inconsistent visitors. But with Stafford’s last two games ending 3-3 and 4-4, there’s a likelihood of seeing the goals fly in at the historic Marston Road ground.

Romulus v Hereford (FA Cup)

Ladbrokes News were on the case a fortnight back, to run the rule over Hereford striker John Mills, and we’d recommend checking out the prolific hitman for yourselves.

A huge crowd of 2,624 watched the 26-year-old striker score twice in a sensational 4-2 comeback win over Alvechurch in the last qualifying round, and both Mills and the Bulls are becoming renowned for their fantastic attacking football.

As for Romulus, the Sutton Coldfield club knocked out last year’s fairytale side Sporting Khalsa in the last round, so we could well see a hard-fought contest here. For those in the West Midlands, we reckon the Central Ground is the place to be come Saturday 3pm.

Dartford v Maidenhead United (National League South)

While the Darts suffered a first defeat in five last weekend, we reckon fans in the South-East should checkout their meeting with Maidenhead tomorrow.

The hosts can lay claim to the National League South’s second-highest average attendance, while visitors Maidenhead are top of the table following five wins on the trot – so will it be fans or form which swing this one?

Whatever the outcome, you can expect a warm welcome and fantastic atmosphere at the impressive Princes Park – and for fans looking to make a day of their trip, we’d recommend a wander around the scenic River Darent.
