Bookies make it a two-horse race for Charlton Athletic post

Published:

The search for a new Charlton Athletic manager is well and truly underway following Russell Slade’s dismissal just over a week ago. And while Kevin Nugent is in charge temporarily, it looks as though either Karl Robinson or Gary Caldwell will get the job on a permanent basis.

While Nugent oversaw the Addicks’ comfortable 2-0 victory at home to Port Vale last weekend, it’s thought that the Charlton board want someone with experience of League One, and the frontrunners for the vacant position certainly offer that.

Karl Robinson achieved promotion to the Championship with MK Dons back in the 2014-15 campaign, while Caldwell blitzed the division in his first managerial post with Wigan Athletic last year.

Both men are currently without a club, and thus either could be drafted in as early as this week, in preparation for Saturday’s game against second-placed Sheffield United.

As things stand, it’s Robinson who is in pole position for the job at 1/5, but our traders are refusing to rule out a move for Caldwell (7/2).

Charlton are just four points off a play-off spot as things stand, although victory over Bristol Rovers this week could see them leapfrog a handful of sides into a respectable position in the table, providing other results go their way.

The board are looking to bounce back into the second tier of English football at ‘the earliest opportunity’, and optimistic Addicks can get odds of 8/1 on their team doing just that at the first time of asking.

And they need only look at last year’s standings for inspiration. Charlton, currently on 23 points, are nine points better off than Barnsley were at this stage last year. The Tykes went on to achieve promotion via the play-offs and are currently impressing in the Championship, sitting in an impressive 15th-place.

What do fans think? Is Robinson the right man for the role, or would Caldwell do a better job? Perhaps there’s someone else you think should be in the mix…
