Napoli’s Mertens linked with Manchester – but is it City or United?

Published:

Dries Mertens is one of Europe’s most in-form forwards right now, and his performances have drawn the attention of both Manchester clubs.

The Napoli ace has hit a fine 18 goals from 24 Serie A appearances this term,  while also netting five times in the Champions League.

Throw in seven league assists and another four in Europe and the 29-year-old is arguably the most productive man on the continent.

But the Belgian’s contract with Gli Azzurri is up next summer, and talks have reportedly stalled and with a valuation of just £17m by transfermarkt.co.uk, Mertens is a man in demand.

It has also been claimed by Italian outlet Il Mattino that the 29-year-old has held talks with representatives from Manchester.

But is it City or United?

There are arguments for both Premier League heavyweights, with the Citizens set for a major overhaul this summer.

Earlier this week our traders offered just 3/1 that Pep Guardiola would sign at least seven players this summer.

Both Jesus Navas and David Silva have been touted for a potential exit, freeing up space for a forward of Mertens’ calibre.

United won’t be quiet in the off-season either though.

The Red Devils know they will need someone to succeed Zlatan Ibrahimovic either this summer or next, and many are expecting the Old Trafford outfit to splash out sooner rather than later.

And with a deal for Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann seemingly going cold in recent weeks, has Jose Mourinho turned his attention to Mertens?

Speculation over Anthony Martial’s future in Manchester also adds weight to United’s claims.
