The odds suggest Newcastle, not Brighton, will win the Championship

| 12.04.2017

We’re well into the business end of the season now, and just five games separate either Newcastle United or Brighton & Hove Albion from finishing the Championship campaign as winners of the division.

As things stand, it’s Brighton who lead the way in the second tier of English football, two points ahead of the Magpies in second-place.

But both have stuttered in recent weeks, and we’d be surprised if things stayed as they were for the remaining quintet of fixtures.

However, if you’re fancying one of the two teams (or both!) to romp home between now and May, our traders have offered odds on the leading two sides in the division winning all of their remaining fixtures.

And they make it more likely that Chris Hughton’s men drop points, with 6/1 on offer for Newcastle to win their last five games of the season, while 10/1 says Brighton do the same.

It’s worth noting here that this is by no means uncommon for either side.

The Seagulls enjoyed a run of five straight victories over the festive period, while the Magpies have managed 15 points from a possible 15 on two previous occasions already this year.

Of course, were Brighton to drop just one point, the race for the title would be out of their hands. That’s because Newcastle currently boast a superior goal difference, meaning that if the pair were locked on the same points tally come the end of the season, Rafa Benitez’s men would go up as champions.

If we were pushed for an opinion, we’d be leaning towards the 6/1 on Newcastle here. Defeat at the weekend against Sheffield Wednesday means they’ll want to bounce back in the coming weeks and make a real statement en route their immediate return to the Premier League.

Brighton, meanwhile, have already recorded three wins on the spin, so to win their next five would give them a 100% record from eight games, something they haven’t done since their 2010-11 campaign in League One.

That being said, one would argue the south coast have an easier run of fixtures between now and the final day.

While Newcastle have to face Leeds United, Ipswich Town, Preston North End, Cardiff City and Barnsley, three of Brighton’s last five games come against sides currently in the bottom 10 of the division.

Amazingly, their run of fixtures between now and the end of the season is a carbon copy of their run of games between October and November last year. They’ll start with a clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers, followed by games against Wigan Athletic, Norwich City, Bristol City and Aston Villa.

Earlier on in the season, only a draw with the Villans prevented them from achieving a 100% record against these teams.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have already beaten each of their next five opponents once this season, so they’ll certainly be confident heading into the final month of Championship football this seas.
