Who features in our craziest Final Day scorelines of yesteryear?

Well that soon came round. Once again, the Final Day of the Premier League season is almost upon us. And while there may not be all that much to play for this year, that’s not to say there’s nothing to get excited about.
Chelsea have won the league, Tottenham Hotspur have secured second spot, while it would take something pretty spectacular to see Manchester City fall outside the top four.
Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Hull City have all been relegated, while Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City will do battle for the final Champions League spot.
It’s far from uncommon to see a couple of crazy results on the final day of the season, and today we’re taking a look back at some from over the years.
And our trip down memory lane begins at St James’ Park…
Newcastle United 5-1 Tottenham Hotspur – 15 May, 2016
A point would’ve guaranteed Mauricio Pochettino’s men second spot in the table, but it’s safe to say things didn’t go according to plan.
The Magpies had already been relegated to the Championship but made sure they went out with a bang. Rafa Benitez’s men went in at half-time 2-0 up before Erik Lamela pulled one back for the visitors.
Aleksandar Mitrovic then saw red for a tackle on Kyle Walker. And yet somehow, Newcastle ran riot, scoring three more goals to ensure Arsenal would finish the season above Spurs.
Stoke City 6-1 Liverpool, 24 May, 2015
Not one any of us saw coming…
This was Steven Gerrard’s last ever game for Liverpool, and although he managed to get on the scoresheet, even he couldn’t do anything about what he was witnessing.
The Potters netted a staggering five goals in the first-half before Peter Crouch added a sixth in the 86th minute.
This was the first time in 52 years that Liverpool had conceded that many goals in a single game. Good going, Stoke!
West Bromwich Albion 5-5 Manchester United – 19 May, 2013
It may have been Sir Alex Ferguson’s last ever game in charge of United, but the Baggies weren’t going to gift him his final three points.
The Red Devils stormed into a 3-0 lead and looked great value for victory. At least that’s what their supporters would have thought.
James Morrison pulled one back before half-time for Albion before Romelu Lukaku stole the show in the final 45 minutes of the season, netting a perfect hat-trick amidst one of the most explosive halves in Premier League history.
United stretched their lead to 5-2 with under 30 minutes still to play, but the Baggies fought back to level the scores and ensure their own fans had something to cheer about themselves.
Chelsea 8-0 Wigan Athletic – 9 May, 2010
The Blues knew a win by any margin would’ve been enough to ensure the Premier League title would be returning to Stamford Bridge.
They didn’t have to run riot…
Wigan had already lost 9-1 to Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the season. And to be fair to the Latics’ defenders, they learnt their lesson from that day. Sort of. They conceded just the eight on the final day against Chelsea.
It was the seventh time that season Wigan conceded four or more goals in a single game.
Middlesbrough 8-1 Man City – 11 May, 2008
“It was embarrassing for everyone.”
That was the view of the then-City manager, Sven Goran Eriksson, and he wasn’t wrong. Within 16 minutes, the visitors were down to 10 men and had conceded a penalty.
But they were still in the game at half-time, albeit 2-0 down heading into the break.
Then came goals three, four, five, six and seven. Elano netted a consolation goal for City, but Afonso Alves rounded off the scoring in injury time. We reckon it’ll be a while before we see a repeat of that scoreline!
Fulham 6-0 Norwich City – 15 May, 2005
The Canaries played an unfortunate part in one of the division’s greatest ever final days. Four sides were battling to avoid the drop. One of those was Nigel Worthington’s men, whose fate was in their own hands.
Victory against Fulham would’ve ensured Norwich maintained their Premier League status for another year.
Then they went and lost 6-0 away at Craven Cottage. Not part of the plan.
It took another six years for them to return to the top-flight.
