French duo stand in the way of Murray and Konta at Wimbledon

It’s so far so good for Andy Murray and Johanna Konta, who both came through their third round Wimbledon matches on Friday.

Murray saw off Fabio Fognini in four sets, while Konta dealt will Maria Sakkari in two.

And next up for the Britain’s top two are French opponents.

Benoit Paire will look to stop Murray reaching the quarter-finals, while Caroline Garcia will be hoping for the same versus Konta.

The odds, however, suggest the French duo will be heading back across the channel after Sunday’s matches.

Murray is 1/9 favourite to defeat Paire, who has reached this stage of a Slam just once before.

And Konta, having reached the fourth round at SW19 for the first time in her career, is 4/11 to now go on and reach the last eight.

But while Paire looks an unlikely upset at 11/2, Garcia is firmly in the mix at 7/4.

Indeed the 23-year-old has already defeated Konta this year, doing so at Indian Wells.

Konta has already been taken to a third set once in the tournament – in the second round against Donna Vekic – and the pick of this fourth round tie could be for the Brit to prevail 2-1 at 11/4.

In the outright betting Konta remains 9/2 favourite to become Britain’s first Ladies’ Singles Wimbledon champion since 1977.

But with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic all impressing so far, Murray is still 11/2 fourth-favourite to secure a third Wimbledon title.
