In a surprising dual announcement this morning, Tottenham released a statement that one of their star youngsters, Joshua Onomah, had signed a new deal, and joined Aston Villa on a season-long loan.

The England U-20 World Cup winner has long been touted as the most impressive of Spurs’ youth players but had, up until now, been refused a loan elsewhere.

According to the Independent’s Jack Pitt-Brooke, Pochettino was so protective of the player, and so trusting in his coaches at the club, he didn’t want him under anyone else’s guidance.

Moves to Huddersfield, Brighton, Burnley and Celtic were all rebuffed.

The Argentinean has softened his stance, though, allowing the midfielder to head to Villa for the season. It’s understood the deal involves Onomah playing in his favoured central midfield role under Steve Bruce.

It’s arguably a strange move by Pochettino, considering Bruce is hardly part of the Johann Cruyff school of coaching.

The move will be seen as quite a coup by the claret and blue part of the Midlands. Although already well-stocked in the midfield department with the likes of Glenn Whelan, Mile Jedinak, Henri Lansbury and Conor Hourihane, the young midfielder is touted as the best of his generation.

Seeing himself as a box-to-box merchant, the Enfield-born 20-year-old will have his eyes set on starting against Hull on Saturday evening having signed for the Villans just before the 12pm registration deadline.
