Here’s what Man United need to do in the January window

January is a pivotal moment of the season for most teams. The January transfer window opens and that gives sides the opportunity to improve.

For some outfits, it can mean the difference between a great escape or European football.

The Ladbrokes News team are profiling all 20 Premier League clubs.

Here it’s Manchester United’s turn to go under the microscope…

What they need

It’s difficult to pinpoint where United need to strengthen. They have the second best attack and the joint-best defence.

The Premier League is gone now so attention will turn to the Champions League and how far they can progress. Elite level players are needed.

Who they’re targeting?

Monaco’s defensive midfielder Fabinho has long been linked with the club. Whether that happens in January or next summer, is anyone’s guess.

Another one is Antoine Griezmann. But that potential saga will most likely take place after the World Cup.

A left-back will be targeted and that may mean a move for Spurs’ Danny Rose.

Who they might lose?

A number of players exiting Old Trafford seem likely. Luke Shaw has not lived up to expectations. And despite a recent run in the side, may be allowed to leave in January, before his contract expires in June.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has also fallen out of favour and will possibly be let go should a suitable offer arrive.

Final Thought

The cup competitions are where United will be concentrating from now until summer. Don’t expect major surgery in January.

It’s probable most business will be done on players leaving rather than arriving.
