Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for in-demand Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka.

Goretzka’s contract expires at the end of the season, which means he’d be available on a free transfer this summer.

The 22-year-old’s ability to win possession and then use the ball well means he’d be an absolute bargain.

As well as United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also thought to be interested. The Germany international can negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in the New Year.

Jose Mourinho will want greater depth in central midfield. Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba are established as his first-choice duo. But there’s scope to improve upon the other options.

Marouane Fellaini is out of contract this summer, Michael Carrick is approaching the end of his career and Ander Herrera has only been trusted to make five league starts this season.

Goretzka could push for a regular place in the starting XI. He’s scored four goals in 11 Bundesliga appearances this term.

United face CSKA Moscow in the Champions League this week before a huge clash with Manchester City on Sunday.
