Who have been Wigan’s key men this season?
Published:
Wigan Athletic are having a superb season and they came agonisingly close to knocking Premier League side Bournemouth out of the FA Cup last weekend.
They went 2-0 up inside the opening 30 minutes at the Vitality Stadium. But the Cherries eventually fought back and scored an injury-time equaliser.
Paul Cook’s side will be disappointed to have conceded so late, but they can take heart from the performance.
They’ve shown real quality this term. The Latics are top of League One and look set for an immediate return to the Championship at 1/20.
We’ve taken a look at the players behind their impressive form.
Nick Powell
Nick Powell has got his career back on track at the DW Stadium. He’s showing the talent that earned him a move to Manchester United as a teenager.
The midfielder drives the team forward and he’s chipped in with 11 league goals this season. Aston Villa have shown interest in Powell, but Wigan hope the 23-year-old will sign a new deal.
Michael Jacobs
Out on the left, Michael Jacobs’ quality stands out at this level. The 26-year-old has tormented plenty of full-backs this season.
He’s a creative wide player with an eye for goal. He’s scored eight goals and supplied three assists.
Dan Burn
Wigan have the best defensive record in League One (12 goals conceded). Dan Burn’s played a major role in that.
The towering defender is the team’s leader at the back. He’s also pretty handy on the ball too, which helps them to get attacks started.
Lee Evans
Ruben Neves’ arrival at Wolverhampton Wanderers meant Lee Evans joined Wigan on loan in search of regular football. It’s worked out very well so far.
The 23-year-old’s all-action displays in midfield earned him a first Wales cap in November. He’s set up eight goals in league action, more than any of his teammates this term. If he keeps up this form, he could be part of Wolves’ Premier League squad next season.
