Weekend talking points: Chelsea win the cup and Inter stun Lazio

The end of the season is upon us, but last weekend still found time to produce a bumper bout of drama and excitement.

It was cup final time at Wembley, while La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1 all came to a conclusion.

And to start your week, we’ve run you through the big footballing stories…

Conte and Chelsea claim the cup

The 2018 FA Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester United wasn’t a classic encounter.

But it did ensure that the Blues and boss Antonio Conte had something to cheer after a difficult season. Eden Hazard’s penalty proved the difference as Chelsea won their eight FA Cup final.

Penalty drama in the FA Trophy

If the FA Cup final was underwhelming, then the same cannot be said for Sunday’s FA Trophy final between Brackley Town and Boreham Wood.

Wood took the lead in the first-half, and were seemingly destined for victory until the very final seconds of stoppage time.

Town missed a number of chances during the game, but levelled it at the death thanks to a Roger Johnson own-goal. Then they won it on 5-4 on penalties to win the competition for the first time.

Inter are back in the Champions League

Inter Milan will make their Champions League return next season after a sensational victory away at Lazio.

Luciano Spalletti’s side had to win at the Stadio Olimpico, or fourth-place would go to their hosts.

Lazio lead for much of the match, and with 12 minutes to go Inter needed to overturn a 2-1 deficit.

And amazingly that’s exactly what played out. Mauro Icardi’s penalty levelled the game on 78 minutes, before Matias Vecino headed in the winner.

Fitting farewells for Torres and Iniesta

There was plenty of emotion over in Spain as Fernando Torres and Andreas Iniesta played their final games for Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, respectively.

Torres rolled back the years to score twice in a 2-2 draw with Eibar, while Iniesta skippered Barca one more time in a 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad. The club produced a stadium mosaic reading ‘Forever Iniesta’ prior to kick-off.

Frankfurt stun Bayern in Pokal final

It was cup final time in Germany too, but there was a huge twist in store as Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Bayern Munich 3-1 in the DFB Pokal.

Bayern, who had won the Bundesliga with ease, found themselves 1-0 down early on.

Robert Lewandowski levelled shortly after the interval, but a late double for Niko Kovac’s side completed a stunning victory for Frankfurt, who won the competition for the fifth time and the first since 1988.
