Uruguay v Portugal tips: Could it go all the way in Sochi?

Cristiano Ronaldo - Portugal

Uruguay and Portugal meet in the second of the World Cup’s last-16 clashes at the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi.

It’s a particular sort of clash with some describing it as the Portugal of South America vs the Uruguay of Europe.

And our traders can barely split the sides with Uruguay at 33/20 and Portugal at 9/5. The Draw is also available at 9/5.

The two sides have only played each other twice before, the last time back in 1972. Portugal have never lost, winning one and drawing one.

The odds suggest this game is going to be extremely tight. And it certainly looks likely. Both sides are counter-attacking beasts who pride themselves on a solid defence and clinical finishing.

However, Portugal have looked particularly dodgy at the back in all three group games. Spain scored three, while only Morocco’s lack of composure in front of goal kept them scoreless. Plus, Iran could have had a few, too.

Uruguay, on the other hand, have been much more solid. In fact, they’ve yet to concede. And with Atletico Madrid lynchpin Diego Godin holding the centre of defence, you can see why.

However, star duo Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani have blown hot and cold in attack in the three group games.

On the flipside, while Portugal have looked leaky, Cristiano Ronaldo has been razor sharp in front of goal. The Real Madrid striker has struck four times in the group stages already and missed a penalty.

If Uruguay can stop Selecao das Quinas’ main man, they’re in with a big chance of making the quarter-finals.

This is going to be tight, and tense. Neither side will likely go for it until they absolutely have to. It’s 11/10 the Result after 60 minutes is a Draw. And it’s 9/5 the game goes to Extra-Time.

In the goalscorer markets, Ronaldo is 16/5 to score first, and 11/8 to net Anytime. Cavani and Suarez are 7/2 to be First Goalscorer.

34-year-old Ricardo Quaresma scored the type of World Cup goal he’s been trying his whole life against Iran. The Besiktas winger’s golazo was right out of the top hat. He’s 7/2 to score again at Anytime throughout the 90 minutes.
