Great Britain v Chile betting tips and preview

Team GB are 7/1 third favourites to win the gold medal in Japan and start their campaign at 1/6 to beat a Chile team making their debut at the Olympics.

Japan and Canada also make up the group, but it will not be plain sailing for Great Britain having not played a competitive match since the 2019 World Cup because of the pandemic.

Hege Riise replaced Phil Neville when he joined Inter Miami and she has picked 19 players from England in her 22-woman squad so let’s look at some of the markets and odds in our Great Britain v Chile betting tips.

Match Odds

Britain’s sole warm-up for Wednesday morning’s opener was a behind-closed-doors 3-0 victory over New Zealand during which Ellen White netted a double and Nikita Parris was also on target.

Half of Team GB’s 22-woman squad are Manchester City players so despite the inactivity on the international front, a good number have had the benefit of playing as a team in the WSL where they finished two points behind champions Chelsea.

Chile dropped off the FIFA rankings five years ago because of inactivity but they have since undergone a renaissance, finishing runners-up at the 2018 Copa America and qualifying for the following year’s World Cup.

They qualified for the Olympics with a goalless draw against Cameroon for a 2-1 aggregate victory in April and last month drew 0-0 with two-time world champions Germany five days after losing 1-0 to Slovakia.

Defensively, they may be tough to break down so we go 33/20 on Team GB to win and under 2.5 goals or it’s 7/10 on a win by three or fewer match goals, while a win to nil is 4/9.

Although Team GB have not had the build-up they would have liked, England had a couple of friendlies against France and Canada in April which they lost by two-goal margins.

England were behind at the break in both matches and while that may not be the case on Wednesday, Draw HT/Great Britain FT can be backed at 12/5 and a 1-0 victory is 9/2.

Talking Tactics

World player of the year Lucy Bronze missed those two friendlies but did start the 6-0 win against Northern Ireland in February when White scored a hat-trick in Riise’s first game in temporary charge of the Lionesses.

The former Sweden and USA coach deployed a 4-2-3-1 system in that game, although she switched to a 4-4-2 against France and Canada.

Chile do not have many household names but goalkeeper Christiane Endler recently joined seven-time Champions League winners Lyon.
