Nations League: England v Hungary betting tips and odds

England are staring relegation in the face when they take on Hungary in the Nations League at Molineux on Tuesday night when they are 1/4 favourites to win.

The Three Lions are bottom of the group with two points from their first three games, so could do with a victory against the 12/1 shots, who beat England in the opening group match 10 days ago.

The game is a sell-out in contrast to Saturday’s goalless draw with Italy as we look at some of the main talking points to help with our England v Hungary betting tips.

England v Hungary form

Gareth Southgate has used the Nations League games to examine different players and formations ahead of the World Cup which starts in November and as a consequence results have been patchy.

England started their Group A3 campaign with a lacklustre 1-0 defeat in Budapest followed by a more encouraging 1-1 draw in Germany and their winless run continued at the weekend in a drab goalless draw against an inexperienced Italy team, played in front of a couple of thousand schoolchildren.

Southgate made six alterations for the third of four Nations League games in an 11-day spell, with Fikayo Tomori making his full debut, Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale winning his second cap and Tammy Abraham starting in attack.

After the game, the England coach admitted relying too heavily on Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling’s goals is a worry.

He said: “Clearly across these four games we’re needing to look at different players ahead of the World Cup. Today was part of that process.

“We knew on the back of a physically tough game in Germany the other night, also to refresh the team was going to be important. I think we had two or three very good chances that we have to take. You don’t get loads of chances in games against the top-level teams, that’s how it is.

“We’d like to have created more given the amount of possession we had and we definitely used the ball better in the back two thirds of the field than we did the other night so that was pleasing. But in the end we’ve not got the goal to make the difference. We’re very, very reliant on Harry and Raheem for our goals at the moment and that is a concern.”

Hungary were expected to be the whipping boys, but just like at Euro 2020 where they drew with France and Germany in the group stage and were just six minutes away from reaching the knockout stage, they have proved competitive, taking four points from their three games to sit in second place.

In contrast to Southgate’s approach, Marco Rossi only made three changes for the 1-1 draw with Germany, who had twice as much possession, but lost the shot count 11-6, seven of which were on target compared with the visitors’ one.

Every match in the group has involved three goals or fewer and England are 17/20 to win that way or 5/2 to pick up three points and concede bearing in mind the Magyars have scored in every match, including a 2-1 defeat in Italy.

England have been drawing 0-0 at the break in all three matches so 13/10 on a level opening 45 minutes looks a possibility, while a goalless first half is 9/5. Draw HT/England FT is 5/2.

England v Hungary head to head

Hungary are unbeaten in their last two meetings with England, having surprisingly drawn 1-1 at Wembley in a World Cup qualifier less than six weeks after they were thrashed 4-0 by the Three Lions in Budapest.

Rossi’s side took the lead with a first-half penalty at Wembley just as they did with the winning goal earlier this month, so we go 19/5 on the visitors opening the scoring and 11/2 to do so before the break.

They can also be backed at 17/4 to draw, it’s 9/1 on another 1-1 scoreline as it was against Germany or 11/4 in the double chance market in our England v Hungary betting tips.

Hungary are also 9/5 to score exactly once as they have in all three games.

England v Hungary team news

Kalvin Phillips was surprisingly deemed fit enough to start as a substitute against Italy and came on for the last 25 minutes despite suffering what Southgate described as a “severe dead leg” against Germany.

Phil Foden is training but has yet to play a minute so far having following a bout of Covid, but he could feature on Tuesday.

John Stone, Jude Bellingham and John Stones were rested at the weekend, so they are expected to play some part against Hungary, possibly in starting roles, along with Conor Gallagher.

Hungary goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi is suspended so Denes Dibusz could deputise, but midfielder Andras Schafer returns from a ban.

Goalscorer odds

Kane came on as a sub against the Azzurri, so may start at Molineux as he looks to close in on Wayne Rooney’s all-time scoring record of 53.

The England captain brought up a half-century of goals with a penalty in Munich and is just three behind Rooney, so we go 23/10 on the Tottenham striker breaking the deadlock, 4/5 on him finding the net and 7/2 to bag at least a double.

Mason Mount struck the crossbar against Italy and is 6/1 and 23/10 in the two markets, while Sterling is 9/2 and 17/10, the same price as Jarrod Bowen.

Stones has scored three goals in 56 appearances for England and is 22/1 to open the scoring or 15/2 in the any-time market.

Zsolt Nagy netted an early opener against Germany and is 40/1 to draw first blood again or 12/1 to score, while Dominik Szoboszlai is 14/1 and 5/1 having struck the winner against England from the spot.
