Positive reaction to wholesale changes at Berwick brings hope

A wholesale change in personnel can sometimes unsettle playing staff at a club, but according to Berwick Rangers striker Darren Lavery it’s done wonders for his team.
Colin Cameron has retained just seven players from the squad that guided Rangers to an eighth placed finish last term, as he looks to take the club through the league system.
Following the side’s 2-1 win in their Ladbrokes League Two opener win against Montrose, Lavery was full of praise for the recruitment process:
“Obviously the gaffer’s brought in a lot of new faces and it’s been quite a short period of time for everybody to get to know each other but, so far I’d say it seems to be working”, he told the club’s official website.
“The boys are gelling well together and there are some positive signs for sure.”
Those positive signs have presented themselves recently, not only in a victory over last season’s bottom club, but also in a dogged display to knock Championship side Alloa Athletic out of the Scottish League Cup on August 1.
A challenge on the promotion play-off spots doesn’t look out of the question at Shielfield Park, despite odds of 2/1 that say otherwise.
Lavery himself, who in bagging a goal in the cup established himself as the team’s sixth highest goalscorer of all-time, says that the wholesale changes have done the club “the world of good”.
It’s been three years since they made the top five in the SPFL’s bottom division, but with Lavery’s partner Blair Henderson taking his record to nine goals in 16 matches for the side, there’s nothing to say they cannot change it this term.
Some of the players they have brought in such as Ewan McNeil and Robert Wilson were playing fairly regularly at a higher level in 2014-15, while there are positive vibes around the youngsters recruited over the summer.
Saturday’s fixture against East Fife, one side likely to be vying with Cameron’s men for those top-spots, will be the acid test for their credentials.
They are 2/1 for victory at Bayview but with five triumphs in their most recent six visits (winning their last three), this new Berwick side could be one to upset the odds.
