Bristol City get Spurs defender Caulker on season-long loan

Many expected Bristol City to be challenging for a play-off place this season after a promising season that last year, but the Robins find themselves at the wrong end of the table after eight games.

Keith Millen has brought in Steven Caulker on a season-long youth loan from Tottenham Hotspur and Caulker will join his Spurs team-mate Danny Rose at Ashton Gate.

Under the rules of the youth loan, Caulker will still be allowed to train with Tottenham and play reserve team matches for the club, and Spurs can recall Caulker after 28 days if need be.

Caulker spent the whole of last season on loan at Yeovil where he played 44 games in a season in which Yeovil conceded 59 goals.

The 18-year-old made his first team debut for Spurs in the 4-1 Carling Cup defeat to Arsenal earlier in the season and Spurs have high hopes for the youngster.

Millen will hope Caulker can provide some stability at the heart of his defence as Bristol look to turn around a poor start to the season which see’s them lie fourth from bottom.

The Robins play fellow strugglers Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Tuesday and Bristol’s away record this season is much more promising than their home form.

They have won one, drawn two and lost one, conceding just three goals in that time and they are a big price at 3/1 to win on Tuesday.

Bristol face Norwich at home on Saturday and that is likely to be Caulker’s debut and first chance to shore up the Robins defence – they are 5/4 to win against sixth placed Norwich.

Bristol were 14/1 at the start of the season to win the Championship, they are now 150/1. See the full Championship football betting odds market here.
