Strachan is the right man for Middlesbrough job says Thomson

Kevin Thomson has come out in support of manager Gordon Strachan after criticism of his team’s early form.

Middlesborough are currently 18th in the Championship table with just three wins from their first ten games.

Thomson, a £2m summer signing from Rangers, is one of eight players that Strachan has brought in from the Scottish Premier League since he took over at the Riverside, and Thompson is backing his manager to turn things around.

“It’s been a wee bit frustrating not to have got better results and it’s inevitable the manager will come under pressure, but we have got a great manager here” Thomson said.

Thomson went on to denounce speculation that there is player unrest at the Riverside.

“There are those who say Gordon Strachan is not the right manager, but they should take a look in the mirror, the players are all behind him.”

Middlesbrough began the season as most pundits tip to win the Championship and return to the Premier League at the second time of asking.

But their poor early form has seen them slide to 25/1 to do so, with seven teams ranked above them.

These include runaway leaders QPR at 5/4, Cardiff at 4/1 and Ipswich at 11/1.

Middlesborough are entertaining newly promoted Leeds this weekend and will want to win so as to alleviate some of the pressure on Strachan.

Boro’s home form this season is the only reason they aren’t in the bottom three as they’ve picked up just a point from their five away games.

At home they’ve done reasonably well, with three wins and a draw from their last four games at the Riverside.

It’s this form that means they’re given odds for 5/4 to beat Leeds on Saturday.

Leeds made a strong start, but have stuttered lately, shipping 13 goals in their last five games and are not fancied to win on Teeside with odds of 9/4 to win.

Middlesborough are 25/1 to win the Championship. See the full NPower Championship betting odds market here.
