The opening weekend of the season is finally upon us and Ladbrokes have wasted no time in lining up the weekend accumulators.
Fleetwood to beat Dagenham & Redbridge @ 4/6
Graham Alexander’s Fleetwood have soared through the leagues in recent seasons, but have always sealed promotion in their second season in a division.
They boast plenty of quality in Jon Parkin and Steven Gillespie, and brought in another lower-league veteran in Stephen Schumacher over the summer.
Opponents Dagenham finished 22nd last season, and could only muster a 19th place result the year before.
Portsmouth to beat Oxford Utd @ 10/11
Guy Whittingham’s Portsmouth are favourites for promotion this year, and feature a squad with plenty of Football League nous.
David Connolly can still cause defenders problems at this level, and he has been joined in the off-season by Tom Craddock, who reached double figures in League Two last season for Pompey’s opening day opponents Oxford.
Patrick Agyemang has also made the move to the south coast, after a loan spell last season, and brings a wealth of experience to a youthful side.
Scunthorpe to beat Mansfield @ Evens
Relegation in May was a fifth change of division in eight years for Scunthorpe, and with firepower including Deon Burton and Chris Iwelumo, they will be eager to make a swift return to League One.
The Iron have won just one opening day match since 2004, but face Conference champions Mansfield who haven’t triumphed in a first day fixture in the Football League since 2002.
No side promoted from the Conference has won their opening day match in the past three seasons.
Northampton to beat York @ 7/4
Play-off finalists Northampton open their account at York, who needed a six-match unbeaten run at the end of the season to ensure survival in the bottom tier.
The Cobblers have lost just once on the curtain raising weekend since 2004, a stark contrast to their opponents here.
York have been beaten three times in six seasons at home on the opening day and haven’t started their account with a win at Bootham Crescent this century – their last home success coming against Swansea in August 1999.
