Leeds United win friends and alienate people on deadline day
Published:There are ways that football club’s can delight their fans on deadline day and ways to infuriate them too. Usually the crux of a supporter’s mood revolves around signing (or lack of) new players.
With social media now bringing a club closer to their fanbase than ever before, the ways to tempt a furious pitch fork-wielding mob to congregate outside the stadium have multiplied.
Judging by Leeds United’s efforts on Twitter in the last hour of deadline day, the rest of the Football League shouldn’t follow the Yorkshire club’s blueprint.
Things started well enough for the Whites, with a tempting promise that news was winging it’s way to the Twittersphere. They even retweeted one fan’s excitement of the prospect, but things went downhill rather rapidly from there:
Don’t go to bed just yet…there is still work to be done #DeadlineDay #lufc
— Leeds United FC (@LUFC) September 1, 2014
Announcements followed, seven minutes apart, to break news of two departures from Elland Road – striker Matt Smith to Championship rivals Fulham and Dominic Poleon to Oldham:
CONFIRMED: Matt Smith completes move to Fulham for an undisclosed fee and signs a 3-year deal with the London club #lufc #DeadlineDay
— Leeds United FC (@LUFC) September 1, 2014
BREAKING: We can confirm that striker Dominic Poleon has signed for Oldham Athletic for an undisclosed fee & signs 2-year deal #lufc
— Leeds United FC (@LUFC) September 1, 2014
Then, just two minutes after the Poleon news, Leeds sent this:
After a busy last hour that is us done for the 2014 Summer Transfer Window #DeadlineDay #lufc
— Leeds United FC (@LUFC) September 1, 2014
The responses are far too X-rated to be published here, but are well worth a read for the sheer vitriol and despair the whole episode produced.
This all comes after they sacked their manager after just six games. Well played Leeds, well played.
