4 comically short manager reigns as Watford boss looks doomed
Published:11 days ago, Billy McKinlay was appointed to Oscar Garcia’s Watford coaching staff. Three days later he became the club’s manager after the Spaniard stepped down from the role due to health reasons.
Now, the former Fulham coach’s name looks to be inked into the history books as the incumbent one of football’s shortest managerial tenures, with speculation mounting over his future after just eight days in charge.
With Watford third in the table and 12/5 to be promoted, we look at some of the other short stints in dugouts around the world:
Leroy Rosenior – 10 minutes at Torquay in 2007
You know that hilarious prank when you sell your house but hide a dead fish in the toilet cistern?
Well the Gulls owners pulled something similar when, 10 minutes before selling the club to a local consortium, they appointed Rosenior.
Jorg Berger – Five days at Arminia Bielefeld in 2009
Bielefled became the 20th club Berger managed when he was drafted in to save them from Bundesliga relegation.
He was given one game to achieve the target, failed, and was sacked. He hasn’t managed since.
Luigi Delneri – 15 days at Porto in 2004
Perhaps replacing Jose Mourinho at the then reigning Champions League winners was always fated to be a short stint, but exiting before a ball had been kicked, for poor time-keeping, is a bit much.
Jose Antonio Camacho – 23 days at Real Madrid
A fan favourite having made 414 appearances at left-back for Los Blancos, Camacho’s return to the club as manager went disastrously as he was forced to resign after a falling out with the club’s board.
After getting a second chance in 2004, the Spaniard again didn’t stick around, lasting just two months before quitting due to poor results.
