England EURO 2024: Gareth Southgate’s suggested 23-man squad

England EURO 2024

EURO 2024 is right around the corner, with England going into the tournament as one of the favourites after losing out in the final of the 2020 European Championship (played in 2021) on penalties to Italy.

The league season is half way through, but will only one International break between now and the tournament this summer, fans and pundits are already speculating about the squad Gareth Southgate is going to take to Germany.

Will Reece James make the cut, despite his injury woes? Will Jordan Henderson’s proposed move to Ajax ensure he keeps his place in the squad? Will Ivan Toney do enough now that he’s back from his ban to earn a seat on the plane?

Right now, fans have tons of questions about the squad, and Ladbrokes is going to take you through the 23 players that England and Southgate need to be selecting for this summer’s tournament if they want a chance at winning it for the very first time.

England’s 2024 EUROs Squad

Goalkeepers:

  • GK – Jordan Pickford
  • GK – Nick Pope
  • GK – Aaron Ramsdale

As of right now, Pickford is the only goalkeeper on our list that is playing each week in the Premier League, and Sean Dyche is hoping that his performance in between the stick will be enough to keep Everton in the divison, despite their ten point deduction and the threat of another punishment looming.

Ramsdale is now Arsenal’s number two, but he’s still far too talented to be excluded from the squad, especially given that Southgate is almost definitely not going to be swayed from having Pickford as his first choice.

As for Pope, while he may be injured right now, as a third or second choice on the bench for England, he’s got the experience and shot stopping ability needed. He should also make it on the plane.

Defenders:

  • RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold
  • RB – Kieran Trippier
  • RB – Kyle Walker
  • CB – John Stones
  • CB – Harry Maguire
  • CB – Marc Guehi
  • CB – Levi Colwill
  • LB – Luke Shaw

England are blessed with right backs, with four of the best in the world available to be picked, but it’s Reece James who misses out. The Chelsea captain has hardly played for The Blues this season due to injury, and isn’t expected back on the pitch until April, with the season set to end just a few weeks later.

With Trent in the form of form of his life and Walker and Trippier also playing good football, they should be the three right-backs selected by Southgate. With three on one side, England can probably afford to take only one left-back, with Trippier being able to play out there, and we’ve gone for Shaw, with Ben Chilwell missing out.

Colwill can also play out there, and has started the majority of his games at fullback for Chelsea this year, which is why we’ve gone for him. Maguire should also make it, given how solid he’s been this season when called upon, with Guehi and Stones taking up the other two slots.

Midfielders

  • CM – Declan Rice
  • CM – Jude Bellingham
  • CM – Phil Foden
  • CM – Curtis Jones
  • CM – Conor Gallagher
  • CM – Kalvin Phillips

England should only be taking six midfielders to Germany, and that’s down to the versatility of the aformentioned Alexander-Arnold, who Southgate seems open to trying out as a starter in the middle of the park for the Three Lions.

Elsewhwere, Rice and Bellingham have to go in, as does Foden, with all three men having stellar seasons for their respective clubs. Jones, who is uncapped, and Gallagher, have also played very well this year for Liverpool and Chelsea respectively. They suit the way Southgate plays his football, and are more than worthy of a spot on the plane.

Henderson misses out, having played the first half of the season in Saudi Arabia for a struggling Al Ettifaq, but its Kalvin Phillips who takes the final spot. Whether he ends up out on loan or not, Southgate is a big fan of the Man City star, and as a back-up to the starting XI, you can do a lot worse.

Attackers

  • RW – Bukayo Saka
  • RW – Jarrod Bowen
  • LW – Jack Grealish
  • LW – Marcus Rashford
  • ST – Harry Kane
  • ST – Ollie Watkins

As for the attackers, we’re going for Saka and Bowen on the right, both of whom are having fantastic seasons for their clubs. Grealish and Rashford have struggled this campaign, on the other hand, but they’re far too talented to leave at home for the tournament.

Kane obviously makes it in, and he’ll be hoping to enter the tournament with a trophy for the very first time in his career, with his Bayern Munich side one of the favourites to win the Champions League, according to Ladbrokes, at the price of 4/1.

Watkins takes the final spot, ahead of Toney and Dominic Solanke, all of whom could end up going to Germany, but the Aston Villa man’s performances this season have done enough to earn him a spot on the plane for this summer’s tournament.

Odds for England to win EURO 2024

As noted, while the tournament is taking place in Germany, the bookies have placed England as the joint-favourites to win the 2024 European Championship tournament later on this year.

Ladbrokes has England to win EURO 2024 at the price of 7/2, the same as France, who actually knocked Southgate’s side out of the World Cup on route to the final in December 2022.

With the likes of Trent, Foden, Bellingham, Kane and Rice, England have some of the best players in the world on their hands, so it’s really not surprising to see them being selected as one of the favourites for the tournament.
