Chelsea v Villarreal betting tips and odds

Chelsea get the chance to add some early-season silverware to their trophy cabinet when they take on Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup at Windsor Park on Wednesday.

The Blues qualified as Champions League winners, while the Spaniards are in Belfast courtesy of a penalty shoot-out victory against Manchester United in the Europa League final.

Thomas Tuchel’s side, who are close to re-signing Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan, are 8/11 to win inside 90 minutes so let’s take a look at the markets and odds in our Chelsea v Villarreal betting tips.

Match Odds

Kai Havertz’s smart finish against Manchester City in the Champions League final secured a second European crown in 10 years for Chelsea and they are 4/11 to win the Super Cup for the first time since 1998.

In 2012, the west Londoners, 5/1 to win the Premier League, defeated Bayern Munich on penalties to win the Champions League but were beaten 4-1 by Atletico Madrid in the Super Cup and lost again a year later and then in 2019.

Wednesday’s opponents have Europa League specialist Unai Emery in charge, winning the competition for a fourth time to qualify for the group stage of this season’s Champions League.

They are 7/2 to win in normal time or 19/10 to lift the trophy in what will be the first meeting between the teams.

Remarkably, Villarreal went through the Europa League unbeaten, defeating Arsenal 2-1 in the semi-finals thanks to a goalless draw in the second leg, and the final ended 1-1 at the end of extra time. A draw is priced at 9/4, 0-0 is 15/2 and 1-1 is available at 11/2.

Villarreal finished seventh in LaLiga and would have been competing in the Europa Conference League had they not beaten Manchester United, so it’s clear to see why the west Londoners are favourites.

Their last 12 matches in the Europa League produced three goals or fewer, which was the case in 28 of Tuchel’s 30 games in charge of Chelsea.

The Blues are 13/10 to win and under 3.5 goals, while they are 3/1 to win and both teams to score.

Talking Tactics

Ahead of Saturday’s Premier League opener against Crystal Palace, Tuchel went with 3-4-3 formations in the last two pre-season friendlies, a 2-1 win against Arsenal and a 2-2 draw with Tottenham.

Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech started in attack, although that could change if Lukaku signs in time.

Villarreal start their season against Granada next weekend but have already had a couple of warm-ups against Premier League opposition, losing 3-2 at Leicester and drawing 2-2 with Leeds in a behind-closed-doors friendly at York’s new stadium three days later.

Goalscorer Odds

Havertz is the 5/1 favourite with Villarreal striker Gerard Moreno to get the ball rolling in Northern Ireland, while Ziyech is 15/2 to break the deadlock and 16/5 to score.

The former Ajax winger, linked with a move from Stamford Bridge during the transfer window, scored a double in the draw with Tottenham and has been exceptional in pre-season.

Daniel Rabi impressed for the Yellow Submarine against Leeds and Leicester, scoring against the former, and he is 14/1 and 6/1 in both markets.
