Ladbrokes’ Luton Town betting odds suggest the Hatters could set a new and unwanted Premier League record this season.

After suffering back-to-back defeats on their return to the top flight and conceding seven goals in the process, the bookies make Rob Edwards’ men just 3/10 to be relegated while they are 50/1 to record fewer points than Derby County’s 2007-08 tally of 11.

Luton were promoted through the Championship play-offs last season and have faced a race against time to get both their squad and their stadium up to scratch.

They are yet to play a home game as work continues on upgrades at Kenilworth Road while a 4-1 defeat at Brighton on the opening weekend was followed by a 3-0 loss at Chelsea on Friday.

Edwards is not worried, though, and felt his players could hold their heads up after competing well at Stamford Bridge before two-goal Raheem Sterling’s decisive intervention caused the game to slip away.

“We don’t like losing but I can accept it when there’s a performance like that,” he said.

“The players were committed, we gave it absolutely everything. We just came up short in both boxes. I’m extremely proud to be involved with this football club and these players.

“We were very resilient and incredibly brave. We went man for man, tried to press them, tried to take the ball. For a time in the second half, we had the territory. I could smell a goal coming but it was them unfortunately.”

Luton’s first home Premier League game of the season is on Friday against West Ham when they are 18/5 underdogs before three games against Fulham (away), Wolves (home) and Everton (away) look a good chance to get points on the board in September.

Alex Apati, of Ladbrokes, said: “Things aren’t exactly going according to plan for Luton this season and, with a generous run of games coming up, it could already be make-or-break territory in terms of setting a new record as the worst team in Premier League history.”
