Aston Villa v West Ham betting tips and odds

West Ham travel to Aston Villa for Sunday’s clash on a high after last week’s 1-0 win against Tottenham lifted them into the top four.

The Hammers have a perfect record in the group stage of the Europa League and they also ended Manchester City’s four-year reign as Carabao Cup champions with a penalty shoot-out win on Wednesday, so life is good for David Moyes and his men.

The visitors are slight favourites at 29/20 to win the game but let’s examine some of the other markets in our Aston Villa v West Ham betting tips.

Match Odds

Villa go into the match on the back of three successive defeats to Tottenham, Wolves and Arsenal during which they scored on each occasion.

So we have an interesting price boost of 7/2 on West Ham to win and both teams to score, which was the case in both games last season.

That said, the Hammers have kept clean sheets in their last four games in all competitions – including a goalless draw with Manchester City during the week – so we go 15/4 on the visitors winning to nil.

West Ham prevented Tottenham from taking a single shot in the second half of last week’s 1-0 win at the London Stadium so Villa will need to be on their mettle this weekend.

Five of Villa’s last six matches have come against teams in the top 10 and they scored on each occasion, so we’d lean towards them scoring against fourth-placed West Ham, with goals at both ends at 3/5.

Villa have the fourth worst first-half record in the Premier League, scoring just twice in their nine games, and are 4/6 to fail to find the net for an eighth time.

With West Ham having only scored four goals, we go 15/8 on a goalless opening 45 minutes.

These teams have drawn a combined three games this season, so at 11/8 one of our Aston Villa v West Ham betting tips is for both teams to score, over 2.5 goals in the match and either team to win which would have paid out in Villa’s last three outings.

Talking Tactics

Moyes stuck with his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation for the midweek win against the League Cup holders in which Mark Noble accompanied Tomas Soucek in the holding midfield role.

But he is expected to make way for Declan Rice on Sunday.

Nikola Vlasic, Manuel Lanzini, Arthur Masuaku and Andriy Yarmolenko are all likely to be back on the bench, replaced by Jarrod Bowen, Said Benrahma, Pablo Fornals and Michail Antonio.

Villa were poor in last week’s 3-1 defeat at Arsenal during which boss Dean Smith deployed a 3-4-1-2 with Emi Buendia playing behind Danny Ings and Oli Watkins.

Leon Bailey came on at half-time at the Emirates and could make his first start of the season.

Goalscorer Odds

Antonio bagged his sixth Premier League goal of the season against Spurs and is 9/2 to break the deadlock but Ings is the 4/1 favourite to score the first goal in our Aston Villa v West Ham betting tips.

Bowen and Benrahma are 15/2 and 8/1 to draw first blood or 11/4 and 14/5 to find the net.

But Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma look lively at 12/1 and 8/1 to score any time bearing in mind a quarter of the Hammers’ goals have come from set-pieces and Villa are the second worst team at defending these situations.

Watkins takes more shots than any other Villa player at 2.6 per game and he is 11/2 and 21/10 in the two markets while John McGinn’s average is 1.6 and the Scot can be backed at 10/3 to score.
