Former Man United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the shock favourite for the Ireland national team job, according to the bookies.

Ladbrokes has installed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the new shock favourite to become the next Republic of Ireland men’s national team manager, taking over from former teammate John O’Shea, who is in the role on a temporary basis.

The former Manchester United boss and striker has emerged from nowhere to become the odds-on 4/7 favourite to replace Stephen Kenny, following a surge of bets. Elsewhere, Interim manager O’Shea is next in the pecking order at 6/4 to be made permanent, ahead of Steve Bruce at 5/1.

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: “We have had more favourites than we can count to become next Ireland manager, but the rush of bets for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has really caught us off guard. His name was never in the frame and all of a sudden he is the red-hot favourite for the job.”
