Southampton v Burnley betting tips and odds

Saints’ 1-0 victory over Leeds last weekend means only three teams have yet to win in the Premier League this season and they are up against one of them on Saturday afternoon.

Burnley were not expected to give Manchester City too many problems last weekend but they created “some good chances”, according to Sean Dyche whose side eventually lost 2-0 at the Etihad.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men are 19/20 favourites to make it back-to-back wins and the visitors are 3/1, so let’s check out some of the other markets in our Southampton v Burnley betting tips.

Match Odds

Both teams have struggled in front of goal in the early part of the season, with Saints having scored just six times in eight games, one more than Burnley.

Just two of Southampton’s goals have come from open play but that’s still one more than Burnley, so goals could be at a premium on Saturday.

At least one team not to score, which would have paid out in four of Saints’ last five games and in three of the Clarets’ previous four, is available at 19/20 while under 2.5 goals is 3/4 bearing in mind that has been the case in six of the last nine meetings between these clubs.

However, three of the last four have involved three goals or more which is 19/20 and Southampton won home and away by one-goal margins last season, including a 3-2 victory at St Mary’s where the hosts came back from two goals down to win.

Hasenhuttl’s men are 13/5 to win by a one-goal margin again and 6/1 for a 1-0 victory just like they did at Turf Moor last season.

Despite selling Danny Ings to Aston Villa during the summer, Saints are in the top half of the table in attack according to expected goals data, so they would probably be higher in the table had they kept their prize asset.

As it is, they have now turned to on-loan Chelsea striker Armando Broja who scored the winner against Leeds and three times for Albania in recent World Cup qualifiers.

It could be a low-scoring affair this weekend, so we like the #GetAPrice special of under 1.5 goals in the first half, two or fewer in the second and either team to win at 5/4 as one of our Southampton v Burnley betting tips.

Talking Tactics

Unusually in the modern game, both managers are expected to deploy a traditional 4-4-2 formation with Broja possibly accompanied by Nathan Redmond up front but skipper James Ward-Prowse remains suspended following his red card at Chelsea.

Che Adams missed the Leeds game with a muscle injury sustained on international duty with Scotland but is back in training.

Burnley duo Maxwel Cornet and Chris Wood started in attack at Manchester City where Nathan Collins continued to deputise for injured centre-back Ben Mee, with Erik Pieters at left-back and Matt Lowton on the right.

Goalscorer Odds

Adam Armstrong, who stayed on the bench for the whole game against Leeds, and Broja are both 4/1 to break the deadlock while Redmond is 11/2 in our Southampton v Burnley betting tips.

Wood is the 5/1 favourite to net the opening goal and 21/10 to score, although Cornet looks a very interesting prospect at 16/1 and 6/1 in the two markets.
